The Daleville City Schools will begin the 2021-2022 school year Tuesday, Aug. 24.
The decision to push back the school start date was made at the Daleville Board of Education meeting July 21 upon the recommendation of Daleville Schools Superintendent Dr. Lisa Stamps.
Stamps explained that her recommendation was being made because of the status of renovations to the Daleville Middle School. Because of building supply shortages nationwide, some of the renovations have been slowed down, she said.
Stamps said that she had talked to the project architect and the construction superintendent. “They have assured me that they are going to be on track,” she said. “Until the state inspector comes and puts his stamp of approval on the renovated facility, we’re not going to occupy it.”
Stamps said that the Windham Elementary School new windows and air conditioning units have been installed. “I’m excited about that,” she said.
In the calendar approved by the board July 21, teachers will come back to school Aug. 11 instead of Aug. 5 and students will return Aug. 24 instead of Aug. 10.
Stamps said that mandates are to provide 1,080 instruction hours. “We will be well above that,” she said, about the 176 total instruction days. Spring Break is from March 28 until April 1 and Daleville High School graduation is set for May 20 at 7:30 p.m. at Warhawk Stadium.
The Daleville City Schools Pre-k Program Orientation is Friday, Aug. 20 at 2 p.m. at Windham Elementary School.
The Daleville City Schools will hold elementary Open House for kindergarten through fourth grades on Thursday, Aug. 19 at 5 p.m. The Open House will begin in the cafeteria and progress to teachers' classrooms after a short orientation.
The Daleville Middle School—fifth through eighth grades—and Daleville High School—ninth through twelfth grades—Open House will be on Thursday, Aug. 19 from 5 to 7 p.m. in teachers' classrooms.
"We encourage parents to come out and meet with their children's teachers," Stamps said.
The annual prayer walk for the Daleville City Schools is on Sunday, Aug. 22, from 3 until 4 p.m. on all campuses. Everyone is invited to participate.
The calendar is posted on the Daleville City Schools website. (check before printing)
In unrelated business, the board members were each presented a copy of an updated student attendance policy that mirrors that of the Dale County Schools. “Because we take our students to court for truancy in Dale County our truancy officer believes this is the best policy for us to adopt,” Stamps said. The proposed policy will lay over for one month and is expected to be voted on at the August meeting. Upon board approval, the policy will become part of the student handbook distributed to parents.
In other business, the board approved the following personnel actions:
Resignations:
Kaylee Spann, Windham Elementary School reading coach;
Jana Foxworth, WES;
Ashley Davis, WES;
Cassidy Mulcahy, Daleville Middle School sixth grade teacher;
Lynn Irwin, WES Principal;
Transfer:
Kenneth Fox from Daleville High School teacher to transportation director;
New Hire:
Irene Rodriguez, DMS reading interventionist;
Dorothy Franklin, Child Nutrition Program worker;
John Issac Richardson, DMS social studies teacher;
Noah Mynard, DHS social studies teacher; and,
Lucinda McDuffie, DHS English teacher.
The next meeting of the Daleville Board of Education is at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 18, at the schools’ central office. The meeting is open to the public.
