Daleville man dead in shooting

Joseph Hawkins, 39, of Daleville is dead after a shooting that occurred in the 2600 block of East Highway 84 in Daleville Thursday, May 27.

Dale County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Mason Bynum said that at approximately 4:48 p.m. the DCSO received a call for assistance from the Daleville Department of Public Safety in reference to a firearm assault.

“Upon arrival we located an unidentified white male with a single gunshot wound to his upper torso,” Bynum said. “The male subject was pronounced deceased on the scene by the Dale County Coroner’s Office.

“Based on our preliminary investigation we believe a tenant of the property encountered the male subject inside a barn as he was checking on his belongings that were being stored inside,” Bynum said. “A physical altercation then took place and the tenant fired a single shot striking the male subject.” 

“This is still an active and ongoing investigation and we will be forwarding our findings to the district attorney’s office,” Bynum said, adding that the DCSO is being assisted assisted in the investigation by the Daleville Department of Public Safety, Ozark Police Department, the State Bureau of Investigation and the FBI.
