The second year of the return of the Enterprise Day of Service brought new groups, new projects and more service to the City of Progress.

The Enterprise Day of Service was held by the OSCAR Club, a group formed of former Women of the Year.

These women, and former Men of the Year, were recognized for their participation in the Day of Service.

The Men of the Year who were present were Eugene Goolsby, Hector Cardona, Lorenzo Harrison, Calvin Garth and Ray Helms. The Oscar Club members who were present were Teresa Townsend, Denine Richey, Linda Page, President Charlene Goolsby, Linda Andress, Sherry Eddins, Ginny Cannon, Mary Sue Cain and Phyllis Talmadge.

Before service projects began, project leaders and volunteers gathered at Bates Memorial Stadium where Charlene Goolsby shared words of thanks and inspiration.

“This is not really about us this morning,” she said. “This is about you, and this is about the commitment to make Enterprise a better place.”

She described the importance of service and thanked the groups, both new and old, who participated in the event.

“Service doesn’t mean that you have to go out and have a project where maybe you build a habitat house or you build a ramp for someone,” she said. “Service is just a lifestyle. It’s the way that you live every day.

“It is a way for you to communicate that you’re going to be a better person, that you’re going to do things that will really make a difference in someone’s life.”

Projects around the city included trash pickup, greenery and garden maintenance for public areas, projects for nursing home patients and more. The City of Enterprise also held a relief drive for Lee County tornado victims.

The groups who participated were Pleasant Grove Baptist Church; HighPointe Church; College Avenue Church of Christ; Church on the Circle; the Enterprise Quilters Guild; the Altrusa Club; the Luncheon Pilot Club; the Enterprise Literary Club; the Semper Fidelis Club; Coffee County Habitat for Humanity; Coffee County Master Gardeners; the Pierian Club; the Chautaugua Club; the Enterprise Lions Club; Hillcrest Elementary School Beta Club; Club Yesepoch; the Enterprise High School Football Team; Townsend Building Supply; Yancey Parker’s; the Downtown Business Association; Billy Cotter/Century 21 Realty; Coffee County Republican Women; District 1 Council member Sonya Rich; Westside Neighborhood Association; the Enterprise Parks and Recreation Department; the Flower Lovers Garden Club; Enterprise Pediatric Clinic; Circle K of Enterprise State Community College; Goolsby Bros. "Service is a lifestyle." I love this statement. Don't get hung-up on the big projects so much as the willingness to step-up when someone needs a hand. It may be a neighbor, a local homeowner with storm damage, a family in need, or a veteran who needs some guidance through the VA maze. Thanks to all organizations helping others and giving volunteers the necessary skills and information to be ready to serve when the need arises, Big or Small.
