The New Brockton baseball team jumped to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning Monday, March 28, over Providence Christian but couldn’t hold on and fell 16-4.
Drew Cashin started the inning with a hard ground ball single to right field and scored when Gabe Herrington singled on a line drive to left field with two outs but that was all the offense the Gamecocks could muster in the inning.
Providence broke the game open in the bottom of the third scoring eight runs and added eight more in the bottom of the fourth.
Jaxon Whitworth took the loss on the mound for the Gamecocks pitching two and two-thirds innings giving up six runs on four hits with one strikeout. Josh Gutierrez came on in relief and gave up two runs on two hits. Hunter White followed pitching two-thirds of an inning giving up four runs with one strikeout Hunter Bedsole came out of the bullpen and gave up four runs on three hits. Chase Ray then pitched the final out in two-thirds of an inning allowing only one hit.
Cashin led New Brockton at the plate going 1-for-2 scoring two runs. Brayson Carr went 2-for-3 with 1 RBI, Payton Green went 1-for-2 scoring one run and Herrington went 1-for-2 with 1 RBI.
New Brockton had seven hits and one error leaving nine men on base. Providence had 10 hits and two errors while leaving nine men on base.
Luverne 9, New Brockton 8
The Gamecocks lost a heartbreaker to Luverne 9-8 on Tuesday, March 29, after leading 8-2 for six innings before the Tigers scored seven runs in the top of the seventh.
New Brockton started off with two runs in the bottom of the first when Kaden Cupp started off the inning with a triple. Cashin was hit by a pitch then advanced on a wild pitch and Cupp scored on the same error. Cashin then scored on another error by the catcher.
Payton Green started on the mound for the Gamecocks pitching six and two-thirds innings giving up eight runs on eight hits with five strikeouts. White came out of the bullpen and gave up one run and and was followed by Cupp who pitched one third of an inning with one strikeout. Cashin closed out the game with no hits and no runs.
Cupp led New Brockton at the plate going 3-for-3 with two triples scoring two runs and 3 RBIs. Dawson Peacock went 3-for-3 with two doubles scoring two runs and 1 RBI. Whitworth went 2-for-3 scoring two runs and 1 RBI while Cashin went 1-for-2 with a double scoring one run and 1 RBI.
New Brockton had 10 hits, three errors and left seven men on base while Luverne had eight hits, one error and also left seven men on base.
Straughn 12, New Brockton 4
In the second game of the day March 29, New Brockton fell to Straughn 12-4. The Gamecocks fell behind 6-1 in the first three innings and just couldn’t catch up the remainder of the game. The Gamecocks made it closer in the bottom of the fifth scoring three runs to pull within 2 with the score 6-4 Straughn, but the Tigers plated six more runs in the top of the sixth and seventh innings to put the game out of reach.
Cashin started the game on the rubber for New Brockton pitching four innings giving up six runs on five hits. Cupp came on in relief and pitched two and one-third innings giving up five runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Ray then pitched one-third of an inning giving up one run and two hits before Gutierrez came on to pitch the last one-third of an inning to get the final out.
Colton McClenny led the Gamecocks at the plate going 2-for-4 with two doubles, scoring one run and 3 RBIs. Cashin went 3-for-4 scoring one run while Peacock went 2-for-3 with a double and 1 RBI.
New Brockton had nine hits, one error and seven men left on base while Straughn had 12 hits, one error and left 10 men on base.
