While the Alabama Crimson Tide football team was honoring superstars like Tua Tagovailoa, Jerry Jeudy, Henry Ruggs III and others at the team’s annual awards banquet, the school also paid tribute to former Alabama and Enterprise High star Dr. Gaylon McCollough.
McCollough was presented with the Jefferson County Distinguished Alumnus Award, which according to the school, is presented to “a former player who exemplified the principles, values, character and attitude that make a person successful either during a particular life experience or over a period of time.”
McCollough was an all-state offensive lineman for Enterprise High School before going on to become an All-SEC and Academic All-American for the legendary Paul “Bear” Bryant at Alabama in the 1960s.
McCollough was a senior on Enterprise’s 1960 Alabama State Championship team and a member of Alabama’s 1964 National Championship team.
Following graduation from Alabama, McCollough become a physician and was even one of Bryant’s personal physicians. He then went on to become an award-winning plastic surgeon and author.
McCollough was presented with the University of Alabama’s Paul W. Bryant Alumni Athlete Award in 2017, which is one of the school’s most prestigious awards.
