With two weeks remaining until the Troy Trojans take the field for the 2021 season, the team held its annual Fan Day scrimmage at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Aug. 21.
During the scrimmage the Trojans saw the starters face off against the starters along with playing through situational challenges, like goal line and third down challenges.
“It was a good day to get out here on the turf and in the sun,” Troy coach Chip Lindsey said. “We got to see some extended drives from our ones and twos and the threes even got some reps, too.
“I thought it was much more back and forth today and I thought the offense did a better job today than the previous scrimmage. I thought the defense still rose to the occasion and got some stops out there, too.”
As quarterbacks Taylor Powell and Gunnar Watson compete for the starting job, Lindsey said both performed well yet again for the Trojans.
“Watching film we’ll evaluate them more,” Lindsey said. “I thought Taylor and Gunnar both played well, took care of the ball and made good decisions. Overall, I was pleased but we’ll watch the film and we’ll make a decision whenever we know (who will be the starter).”
Powell said he feels good about where the offense is currently.
“I think I only had 25 plays out there with me and Gunnar splitting the reps,” Powell said of the scrimmage. “I felt good, though. I felt like we executed well and I’m excited about how this offense is looking. We look explosive.”
Earlier this month, former Auburn running back/cornerback Devan Barrett transferred to Troy as a defensive back and Lindsey said that he believes Barrett will contribute to the Trojans sooner rather than later.
“He’s obviously getting a late start just with learning the terminology and different things here,” Lindsey said. “Devan has played three years at cornerback at a different place, so he has some understanding on what to do there.
“Getting himself comfortable with our terminology and the different calls and things will be the big thing. I like his progress he’s making and he’s very talented. As soon as our coaches feel good about him being in a position to help us I’m sure he’ll be a big part (of the defense).”
