Despite an up and down 2019-2020 basketball season for both the Enterprise State Community College Boll Weevils and Lady Boll Weevils, they were both able to keep postseason hopes alive with conference wins last week.
The Boll Weevils (9-14, 5-6) started off with an 88-64 home win over rival Lurleen B. Wallace on Feb. 10 before throttling Coastal Alabama-East by a score of 103-53 on the road.
Against LBW, the Boll Weevils jumped out to a 45-31 lead in the first half and then continued the pressure by outscoring the Saints 43-33 in the second half to secure the 24-point win.
ESCC was led by Ryan Sanders with 26 points, while Mykil Wilson added 21 points.
The Lady Boll Weevils (8-11, 2-7) also picked up a much-needed win 56-49 over LBW on Feb. 10.
After leading 9-8 in the first quarter, ESCC outscored LBW 17-13 in the second quarter and took a 26-21 lead into halftime. LBW cut the lead to 36-34 heading into the final period, but ESCC was able to outscore the Lady Saints 20-15 in the final period to secure the 56-49 win.
Both sides struggled with turnovers as LBW turned the ball over 14 times and ESCC turned it over 12. The two sides each grabbed 31 rebounds, while ESCC shot 20-of-62 from the field compared to LBW’s 18-of-68.
Savannah Carty led the Lady Boll Weevils with 21 points, while Enterprise native Gwen Mitchell added 10 points, nine rebounds and two steals.
The Boll Weevils picked up another win, 103-53, over Coastal Alabama-East on Feb. 13 in Brewton.
The 103 points is the second time this season that ESCC has reached triple digits in scoring in a game and the 50-point win is the highest margin of victory for the Boll Weevils this season. Both times ESCC scored more than 100 points this season it came against Coastal Alabama-East.
ESCC came out on fire outscoring Coastal 62-30 in the first half and continuing to outscore them 41-23 in the second half.
Wilson led ESCC with 17 points but he was just one of six Boll Weevils that scored in double digits. Jaret Jennins (15 points), Demetri Gallette (13 points), Colon Murry (13 points), Ryan Sanders (12 points) and Terrance Anderson (10 points) all scored 10 points or more in the win.
The top five teams in both the North and South Divisions of the Alabama Community College Conference make it to the ACCC Tournament at the end of the season. The Boll Weevils are currently sitting at No. 5 with Bishop State right on their heels, while the Lady Boll Weevils are sitting in sixth place. With just two games remaining for both teams, every game will count.
