Utility Trailer could be laying off nearly 70 of its approximately 220 employees as early as Jan. 4, due to a steady decline in the demand for flatbed trailer.

Flatbed trailers are most commonly used to transport construction materials for the housing industry, which has taken a hit in recent years.

According to a press release from Plant manager Randall McCollough, the demand for refrigerated and dry van trailers, also manufactured by Utility, remains strong.

“We are aggressively marketing our flatbed trailers and will closely monitor market conditions, which will hopefully improve,” the release read. “We also will continue to do everything possible to minimize the effect on our employees and the community.”

McCollough said if layoffs do occur Utility Trailer will do everything in its power to get employees back to work as soon as possible.
