I’m a fan of capitalism. 

So therefore, I respect the right that television executives have to make money. 

However, I have some rather serious concerns over several decently established television channels selling their soul to the American public and actively choosing to produce awful content. 

The Learning Channel, now known as TLC, was founded in 1972 by the Department of Health, Education and Welfare along with NASA as an informative and instructional network focused on providing real education through the medium of TV.

The network was privatized in 1980 but, in all fairness, continued to air educational content until around 1999. 

As much as I hate to say it, “Trading Spaces” was one of the first reality successes for the network, and it began the slippery slope that has led us to “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo,” that one show were there’s a lot of children and that one with little people or possibly just more children. 

Again, I’m perfectly fine with profit driven content and with people’s God-given right to watch what they please. 

I’m just also a fan of calling it like I see it, and unless TLC now stands for Totally Lacking Content or Time Loss Catalyst, I think we need to consider some other options.

The History Channel used to show history. 

I don’t know how I’m going to explain this channel to my first-born.

Apparently now they operate with the logic that if something is on film, it must be in the past and that’s history. 

Since it was created in 1995, the channel has moved from its origins of mostly military, specifically World War II related documentaries, to well, pretty much anything but that. 

Nowadays, the shows about antiques are the only ones that are even quasi related to history.

It also has programs about past encounters with extraterrestrials and several shows about the possibility of future events. 

That’s literally the only way the network could physically broadcast something that’s 100 percent not history. 

This brings me to The Weather Channel. 

It was started in the early 80’s and, for a while, only showed forecasts for alternating regions of the country. 

It was also defined by its apparent love for jazz, and I mean smooth jazz.

Today our last refuge for an aptly named television station is falling to the wayside. 

The other day I sat in the office under a tornado watch for several hours, and turned on The Weather Channel to find “The Deadliest Space Weather.” 

In The Weather Channel’s defense I will say that its website is still informative and I’m sure it has apps and twitter and all that smooth, 90’s jazz.

However, I’m a dreamer and dare to say that America deserves television channels that make sense. 

People demand sensible and informative packaging on their food, why not their television choices?

I’m pro-name change for History, TLC, The Weather Channel, Music Television, Country Music Television and several other networks across the airwaves.

It shouldn’t hurt business. 

I don’t think anyone watching the History Channel today is disappointed that it’s not showing footage from “Operation Market Garden,” just as TLC fans wouldn’t be excited to catch an in-depth look at cellular permutations during the primetime block. 

The Weather Channel though, they just need to get it together.
