A Coffee County Sheriff’s deputy was involved in a shooting at approximately 3:30 a.m., Aug. 24, after Chad Evans, 21, of Enterprise struck the officer with his vehicle.
According to Chief Deputy Ronnie Whitworth, the deputy was performing a routine ride through on Loftin Street in Enterprise when Evans’ vehicle began tailing the officer’s car.
When the deputy exited his vehicle the driver accelerated. The car struck the deputy and he was thrown onto the hood.
According to Whitworth, the officer fired seven shots into the windshield, roof, back window and trunk of the suspect’s car, one of which stuck the driver in the left shoulder.
The suspect fled the scene, abandoning his car on Forehand Street.
Whitworth said the department used tracking dogs to follow the suspect until the trail went cold.
Later that morning, the department received word the suspect was hiding at a residence in Daleville, where Daleville Department of Public Safety officials and Coffee County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested him at approximately 10:15 a.m.
Evans was transferred to Medical Center Enterprise for treatment and was then released. He is currently being held in the Coffee County Jail.
Evans is charged with attempted murder and two counts of possession of a controlled substance.
Whitworth said other weapons-related charges could be filed as well.
The officer, whose name is not being released at this time, was also treated at Medical Center Enterprise for minor injuries and was released.
As is standard procedure, the Alabama Bureau of Investigation is investigating the incident along with the Alabama District Attorney’s office.
