Elba City Schools employee Martha Pope was arrested and charged with “school employee engaging in a sex act with a student under 19” on Oct. 12.
According to Coffee County Sheriff Chief Deputy Ronnie Whitworth, Pope turned herself into authorities and was processed at the Coffee County Jail but the Elba Police Department handled the investigation. Neither EPD nor ECS have issued a statement on the charges thus far.
Pope was held on a $5,000 bond and booked at 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 12. She was released on bond at 12:30 p.m., according to the Coffee County Sheriff’s inmate roster.
Pope’s bond was set by the Coffee County Clerk of Court Elba Division and her initial court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 10 at 8:30 a.m. at the Elba Courthouse.
According to The Elba Clipper, Pope was hired in 2020 as the high school secretary and was rehired for that position for the 2021 school year back in April.
No further information has been released at this time.
