Coffee County places its vote

Nearly 20,000 registered Coffee County voters made their way to the polls Nov. 6 to place their vote in the presidential election and local elections.

The county had about 71 percent of its registered voters participate in the election.

In the presidential election, county voters chose Mitt Romney as their new president with about 74 percent of the vote. However, nationally, President Barack Obama was re-elected to another term.

In the District 5 commission race, Jimmy Jones won with 70 percent of the vote against Gene Yager.

Jones said he was elated and thanked the voters of District 5 for having the confidence in him to do the job.

"I'm very appreciative of the support, encouragement and prayers," Jones said.

He said he looks forward to working with the other commissioners and county officials in continuing to build infrastructure to attract new industry to Coffee County.

Another top priority, he said, is to see through with the four-laning of Highway 167.

Also in District 5, the county school board seat was won by incumbent Rubin McKinnon with 66.91 percent of the vote against challenger Brandi Carr.

In the 2nd Congressional District race, incumbent U.S. Rep. Martha Roby defeated challenger Therese Ford with about 80 percent of the vote.

The race for Chief Justice of the Supreme Court was close statewide, but in Coffee County, Roy Moore defeated Bob Vance with about 68 percent of the vote.

In the race for Public Service Commissioner, Coffee County voters chose challenger Twinkle Andress Cavanaugh, who received about 67 percent of the vote against incumbent Lucy Baxley.

Statewide, it was a close race as well with Cavanaugh winning with 53 percent at about 10 p.m., with more precincts still reporting.

In the District 1 Coffee County Constable race, Richard Patterson defeated Howard Lee with about 67 percent of the vote.
