Members of the Daleville High School JROTC rifle team members are currently competing in the Wiregrass Tournament comprised of local high schools in the Wiregrass. This competition is sporting, which means students shoot in three different positions: standing, kneeling and prone. The best four scores are submitted to the Wiregrass Tournament then at the end of the season the school with the highest points wins the Wiregrass trophy.
“Pike County was not able to come compete today, but we still have to shoot. Then out of our students the top four scores will be submitted,” Sgt. Maj. Kenneth Petty said.
“We have nine participating today; out of those nine the top four scores will be submitted,” Sgt. Maj. Petty said. “For this competition, students get five minutes to set up, five minutes to sight their target, and 10 minutes to shoot 10 targets. For our students, 10 minutes is plenty of time.”
DHS students in JROTC can be part of several different teams. Students that have chosen to be part of the rifle team must maintain grades of “C” or higher and must comply with all the requirements of JROTC.
“The great thing about rifle team is gender doesn’t matter. If you want to be on the rifle team, you can be on the rifle team as long as you maintain at least a ‘C’ average,” Sgt. Maj. Petty said. “If their grades are lower than a ‘C’ they can not compete. We abide by the Daleville City Schools handbook.”
Students also have to pass the safety test to be able to come in the room where the competition is taking place.
According to Sgt. Maj. Petty, the season will end in February.
