Police chief requests expanded noise ordinance

The noise ordinance in the City of Level Plains may soon include expanded hours.

The Level Plains City Council is expected to vote at the council meeting Feb. 16 on a request by Level Plains Police Chief Johnny Summers to lengthen the time covered by the current ordinance.

Level Plains City Noise Ordinance No. 314 Section 3, item 6 prohibits, “Any noises produced by whatever means between the hours of 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. or at any time or place so as to annoy or disturb the quiet, comfort or repose of persons in any dwelling or other type residence or of any persons in the vicinity.”

Summers asked the council at the meeting Feb. 2 to change the hours to 9 p.m. through 7 a.m. Sundays through Thursdays and 11 p.m. through 7 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

In other business, Place 2 Councilmember Thomas Bury reported that he had been dialoging with BMI about the possibility of renting three large dumpsters and having a city wide Spring Clean Up one weekend in March. Further details will be forthcoming.

In unrelated business, the council approved the renewal of the city’s annual generator maintenance contract with Taylor Power Systems for the city’s generators.

The council meetings have been held at the Level Plains Community Center since Gov. Kay Ivey’s March 27, 2020 order to close municipal facilities in an effort to stem the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. The move was made to accommodate social distancing and to help protect the public and city officials.

The next meeting of the Level Plains City Council is Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 5:30 p.m. at the Community Center located at 47 Z Street near the intersection with Dale County Road 1. The meeting is open to the public.
