Enterprise State Community College is proud to welcome tenor John Wesley Wright, who will give a concert at 7 p.m., Feb. 24, in the Multipurpose Room of the Lurleen B. Wallace Student Center on the Enterprise campus.
Wright is currently the coordinator of the voice and opera workshop programs at Salisbury University in Salisbury, Md.
He has performed with the American Spiritual Ensemble since 2006, and one of his first performances with the group was in Enterprise.
When ESCC approached Wright about bringing the ensemble back, he proposed a solo recital instead.
“I’ve been a recitalists for quite a long time, so that type of thing is really up my ally,” Wright said. “I like to put together something that will speak to everyone.”
Wright's performance is one of the numerous events ESCC is hosting during Black History Month.
The recital, which Wright has titled “Reflections of Love, Spirituality and Freedom,” will feature classical music, folk songs and spirituals but will conclude with an assortment of jazz and blues tunes.
“I wanted this particular recital to be eclectic, but still fit into the theme of Black History Month,” Wright said.
Tickets for the event are $10 for general admission and $5 for students.
The tickets can be purchased at the door or by phone at (334) 347-2623.
Wright will also conduct a vocal master class on from 10:15-11:15 a.m., Feb. 25, in the Multipurpose Room.
Both events are sponsored in part by ESCC’s Lyceum Committee, Black History Month Committee and the Chris and Leah Walls Memorial Fund.
“People get sort of afraid of what a recital really is, but I always want to assure people that it will be engaging and intimate,” Wright said. “It's not stuffy. It's something that is approachable and I think it will be a really nice time.”
