As the Auburn Tigers take on the Florida State Seminoles in the BCS National Championship Jan. 6, Enterprise High School graduates will be on the field, above the sidelines and in the stands.
Several former EHS students are currently working with and for Auburn University in various capacities and have found themselves in Pasadena with the number-two team in the nation.
The closest to the action will be Eric Averett, a 2012 graduate of EHS who plays center on the Tigers’ offensive line.
Averett has been in Pasadena with the team during practices and at the nightly events related to the championship.
On Jan. 1, Averett joined his teammates and members of FSU’s football team at the Staples Center to watch a Los Angeles Clippers game.
“It has been a great experience,” Averett said. “We have our time off, but we’re still practicing everyday and staying focused on the game.”
Averett said the team is up early each morning watching game film, and can usually be found on the practice field by noon.
“We feel really good about the game,” he said. “We had to dust off some cobwebs when we first got here and get adjusted to everything, but we had a really good practice (Thursday) and I think we’re ready.”
On the sidelines, Lewie Thompson, Hal Davis, Mark Welch and Matt Antley will be filming for the Tigers.
While in high school, Thompson filmed EHS football practices and games for nearly six years.
“When I graduated, coach (Truett) Chambers helped me get an interview with Brent Thomas, Auburn’s filming coordinator,” Thompson said. “He hired me and I helped convince him to hire the other guys.”
Thompson said he and the other EHS graduates have been filming practices and games throughout the year on top of scissor lifts.
“We’ve got an Enterprise guy in the end zone and the sideline on scissor lifts and one Enterprise guy on the ground filming special teams,” he said.
Thompson, Davis, Welch and Antley have shot some of the very film the Tigers will be reviewing in the days leading up to the championship.
Brett West, another EHS graduate, is currently a student assistant to Ellis Johnson, Auburn’s defensive coordinator.
During halftime, Big Blue alumnas Samantha Bullinger, color guard, and Ashley Smith, flute, will both be marching with the Auburn University Marching Band.
