Marcus Paul Howell has been hired as Windham Elementary School's new assistant principal.
"(This position) means I'll be able to better assist the stakeholders in Daleville City Schools," Howell said.
Howell said Daleville appealed to him because of the great school system, and he is excited about working with the students, faculty and staff.
"I want to lead," he said. "I like helping others."
As the assistant principal, Howell's duties will include working closely with principal Chris Mitten, teachers and students, helping with discipline, working on the continuous improvement plan, helping develop the school's technology, working on response to intervention and helping prepare and move toward the college and career ready standards set by Alabama’s 2020 plan.
Howell said his goals for the 2013-2014 school year are to learn and grow as a leader.
"I want to grow as an instructional leader and school manager under Mr. Mitten," he said.
Howell said he is looking forward to seeing the students every day in his new position.
"I want to see the children here," he said. "That's what means the most to me. I love seeing them and hearing their voices."
Howell, an Enterprise native, graduated from Enterprise High School in 1983. He later went on to Troy University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in history and a master’s degree in history and education.
In 1991, Howell went to Auburn University where he received a master’s degree in educational media and a Ph.D. in educational administration in 2012.
He is married to wife, Susan, and has one daughter, Kelly Daniel.
Prior to coming to Windham, Howell spent 11 years as an educational media specialist and technologist at Hillcrest Elementary School.
Howell’s previous educational experience includes working at Zion Chapel for 11 years as a history teacher and educational media specialist and technologist.
Mitten said Windham Elementary School has not had an assistant principal since 2006, however, the school system and state were able to provide the funding this year.
"We're excited that with the numbers we have, we'll have an assistant to get some help," he said. "It will allow both of us to really explore more instructional leadership and gives us the opportunity to be more visible in the classrooms instead of always in the office."
Howell was chosen for the position among dozens of applicants who applied from all over the state.
"Dr. Howell (is) the perfect fit for our school," Mitten said. "He's energetic. His first priority is doing what's right for children and he's fully committed to helping us take our school to levels beyond where we are now."
