The Billy Adkins Community Center is gaining popularity in Daleville, and as a safety precaution for the many visitors who come and go during the evening hours, the Daleville City Council members voted Nov. 19 to add more streetlights on Warhawk Drive.
The additional four lights will be added to existing Alabama Power poles near the Daleville High School agricultural building, the practice field, community center entrance and at the intersection of Warhawk Drive and Donnell Boulevard.
Mayor Claudia Wigglesworth said the lights would improve safety and security along those streets.
The estimated annual cost of the lights is about $85.44 each.
The lights are expected to be completed within the next few days.
In other news, council members approved a request from Air Conditioning Associates Inc. of Dothan to make miscellaneous repairs related to the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) inside city hall and the department of public safety buildings.
Air Conditioning Associates recently replaced the HVAC units at city hall and the department of public safety, but noticed several repairs were needed inside both establishments.
“They came up with almost a dozen other items that they saw as safety concerns that they felt needed to be fixed,” Wigglesworth said. “It’s basically replacing duct-mounted smoke detectors, installing new insulated metal duct work, repairing some damage to thermostat wiring, insulating the new wire refrigerated lines, insulating the new copper refrigerant lines and a couple other things.”
The project is estimated to cost the city about $9,275.
In other business, council members approved a resolution to enter into an agreement with the state for the Alabama Department of Transportation’s Transportation Alternatives Program grant for new sidewalks.
The grant will allow the city to expand the existing sidewalk on Donnell Boulevard from Daleville Avenue to Tiny Williams Drive, as well as add a sidewalk on Warhawk Drive and on the east side of Highway 85 from Highway 84 to Bojangles.
As part of the agreement, the city agrees to pay 20 percent of the construction costs, as well as any engineering costs.
The project is estimated to cost about $340,000.
In other news, Wigglesworth reappointed James Horace to the Daleville Housing Authority for a term ending in 2019.
The council also approved a beer and table wine application for the H-mart located at 492 S. Daleville Ave.
The Daleville City Council will meet again at 5:30 p.m., Dec. 3, at Daleville City Hall.
