Each year Christy Hixson, Windham Elementary School Media Specialist, creates a theme and decorates the library for the children to enjoy while visiting the book fair. This year the theme was fall in love with books. Monday, Oct. 28, was Maize Monday and students who found hidden maizes in the school won a prize from the book fair. Tuesday was Tasty Tuesday with free roasted corn for students. On Wednesday, students that spent $10 or more received a free Frisbee. Thursday was Thrilling Thursday and students were allowed to dress up in costume. The most original and creative costume won a book fair prize. Finally, on Family Friday students who spent $10 or more received a free book from the book bin. The book fair is an opportunity for students to buy books and to provide books for other students.
“Book fair is one of the most exciting weeks for the library here at WES. It means that students will have the opportunity to purchase and read many new books and provide that same opportunity for others,” Hixson said. “We do this through our coin contest each year. In the weeks leading up to the fair Windham Elementary collected over $2,200 to help our book fair sales and Scholastic Book Fairs will match those funds in order to help children who are less fortunate have new books to read, too. I’m so proud of our students and our parents who participate each year. It’s a win-win.”
