Col. (ret.) Chaplain Sonny Moore spoke to Daleville High School students on Thursday, Nov. 7, about three things to remember about Veteran’s Day. During his speech he took time out to recognize DHS senior running back Jalen White. Moore pinned White an honorary colonel and congratulated him on all his accomplishments on the football field this season.
Moore’s three points to remember about Veteran’s Day were heritage, heroes and hope.
“We need to remember our heritage. The Revolutionary War came about when a guy in England whose name was King George said I want you to pay taxes and the American people said we aren’t going to pay taxes if we don't have representation,” Moore said. “Great patriots—men and women said we will do whatever it takes to become a free people. In 1607 the first people came to Jamestown and in 1620 the Pilgrims came. We have a great history and heritage as a nation,” Moore said.
“We need to remember our heroes. I’ve known many of them. I have served in uniform with many of them,” Moore said. “America can never repay the debt she owes to soldiers.”
The last point Moore made was hope. He believes our hope is in the Lord.
“The third thing we need to remember is our hope. You know what our hope is? I don't think it is Washington, D.C. I don't think it is armies and navies,” Moore said. “I think our hope—I can tell you what my hope is. I’m a Christian preacher and I’m going to tell you what my hope is. It is right here on this collar. The Bible says in Psalms 33:12, “blessed is that nation whose God is the Lord.”
