DBOE approve lawsuit settlement

The Daleville Board of Education approved the adoption of a lawsuit settlement at its regular meeting on Feb. 19.

The board approved the settlement after exiting a 15-minute-long executive session that was certified by Board Attorney James Tarbox.

The lawsuit filed on Nov. 17, 2017, had the DBOE join with the Dale County Board of Education and Ozark City Board of Education to sue the Dale County Revenue Commissioner Eleanor Outlaw, the Alabama State Department of Education, the Enterprise City Board of Education, the Dothan City Board of Education and their respective superintendents, according The Southeast Sun, files.

At issue is a direction from the State Superintendent of Education, who was citing Alabama law, to the Dale County Revenue Commissioner to include Enterprise City Schools and Dothan City Schools in the 2017-2018 distribution of Dale County school taxes for the students attending the two school systems but live in Dale County, according to The Southeast Sun files.

The settlement was approved 4-0.

In other business, Superintendent Dr. Lisa Stamps recommended the reopening of Daleville Middle School with more details to be discussed at the March 18 board meeting.

“We’re busting out the seams,” Stamps said. “Our elementary school has grown by about 150 (students) over the last two years alone and then we’ve picked up about 85 kids in the last four months with both schools.”

The recommendation was approved.

After the meeting, Stamps said the middle school would occupy its former space in the back portion of Daleville High School and the portion of the school will be renovated. Stamps emphasized that a detailed presentation will be made about the plans for the school at the March 18 board meeting.

The board also approved two fieldtrips: one for system-wide band students to attend the Alabama All-State Band Festival and the other for the high school FFA members to be allowed to take a hunter safety course.

The follow personnel actions were approved at the meeting:

Employment:

Bill Carter, bus driver;

Taylor Hatcher, PE teacher, Windham Elementary School; and,

Resignation:

Justin Hendrix, PE teacher, Windham Elementary School.

The next Daleville Board of Education meeting will be March 18 at 4:30 p.m. at the central office. The meeting is open to the public.
