Brad McCoy has resigned his Daleville High School coaching duties.

McCoy served as the DHS football coach and track coach. The resignation of was approved April 16 at the Daleville Board of Education meeting.

The Warhawks are scheduled to begin spring practice May 5, and DHS principal Mike McDuffie said the school will begin searching for a new coach after spring training is complete.

“We’re going to get through spring training,” he said.

McDuffie said the timeline for the coaching search is not known at this time.

McCoy, who teaches science at Daleville High School, will continue his teaching responsibilities, but resigned as a coach. He said he could not comment on the situation at this time.

McDuffie did not specify a reason for the resignation, but said he believes a Daleville assistant will conduct the Warhawks’ spring training.

“After we get through with spring training, we’ll look for a coach,” he said.

McCoy arrived at Daleville in April 2009 and replaced Mike Dean, who took the Warhawks to the third round of the playoffs for the first time since 2002.

Prior to taking the reigns of the Daleville program, McCoy spent 2008 at Northview as the Cougars' offensive coordinator.

He coached at Prattville from 2002-07 as an assistant on current UAB coach Bill Clark's staff. During McCoy's time at Prattville, the Lions won a pair of state titles.

McCoy coached the Warhawks for five seasons and compiled a 34-19 record.

The team finished 7-4 in his first season and lost in the first round of the Class 3A state playoffs.

Daleville was 8-3 in 2010, and won the first of two Class 3A, Region 2 crowns in McCoy's tenure.

The Warhawks were just 4-6 in 2011, and did not make the postseason.

They rebounded in a big way in 2012. Daleville finished with an unblemished, 10-0 record in the regular season. The mark was the first time the Warhawks had gone undefeated in the regular season since 1992, when they won the state championship.

Daleville won its second region championship with McCoy on the sideline, but lost in the first round of the 2012 playoffs.

During his five seasons at the helm of the DHS program, McCoy tallied a 25-10 record in region play and took the team to the playoffs three times.

The Warhawks were 5-5 last season, and did not make a playoff appearance.

“Coach McCoy did a great job,” McDuffie said. “We wish him well. He did a great job for us. We wish him and his family well.”

Sad to Lose someone so dedicated to those kids. He put so much into that program. Sad that the administration doesn't seem to put much emphasis on athletics. Mostly band. Too much apathy for a coach to be able to really invest in that program. No return on that investment from resources such as quarterback club, volunteers, etc. I think coaches are discouraged here.
