May is here. It is a time of beauty and change, of remembering and honoring others and celebrating all sorts of things.
May is a particularly exciting month for students and teachers. The end of the school year means freedom from school, and it’s the time of the year to celebrate students for their achievements for the past year and, for some, the past 13 years.
For teachers, May means the end of the school year is near. This means it will soon be time to rejuvenate for the next school year, which I’m sure many teachers are ready to do.
Speaking of teachers, the National PTA celebrates their work during National Teacher Week, which will be held May 7-11 this year. National Teacher’s Day is celebrated the Tuesday during the first full week of May.
When you aren’t celebrating teachers for their work or students for their accomplishments, you have plenty of other people you can honor or remember during May.
Nurses are recognized during National Nurses Week, which will be held on May 6-12 this year. You can take this time to celebrate those who help you and others in so many ways.
This is the moment where I thank my mother who serves as a nurse for three separate doctors in two specializations. Thanks for your hard work, Mom.
Police officers also have a time to be remembered and honored for their hard work and sacrifice.
Police Week is celebrated the third week of May. This is the time to thank a police officer for his or her hard work in keeping your community safe.
For those who have sacrificed in the line of duty, Police Officers Memorial Day is held on May 15. Take a second to send up a thought or prayer for those officers’ families.
Other first responders can also be recognized for their work in May. Emergency Medical Services Week is recognized during the fourth week of May.
These individuals do so much for the community. Take a second to thank them for their work, whether it’s their job or they volunteer their time to do it.
If you want to host a party for a “holiday” that’s a bit more unique or unusual, perhaps you should host a gathering of mourning for Lost Sock Day on May 9.
If you are a baker, you might celebrate one of the greatest snacks of all time: The chocolate chip cookie. National Chocolate Chip Day is held on May 15.
If you dream of big bucks in your bank account, you could also celebrate Be A Millionaire Day on May 20.
Of course, if you don’t want to celebrate weird or unique holidays, you could always go with the classics.
Cinco de Mayo is coming up soon, so enjoy a plate of tacos or nachos on Saturday.
Mother’s Day is also around the corner on May 13. Make sure to thank the woman who brought you into this world or who you recognize as your mother.
It seems that there are more than enough things to celebrate or remember in May. What’s the most important to you?
