The John Wiley Brock VFW Post 6683 of Enterprise decided to help out the Enterprise High School girls’ basketball team recently with a donation.
VFW 6683 donated $400 to the girls basketball program to help pay for expenses for some of their road trips this season and so the Lady Cats can attend offseason basketball camps.
“It means a lot because these girls work hard every day and to do the things we want to do as a program, we have to have the funds to do it,” Enterprise coach George Scott said. “When community organizations support us, that means the community is behind us and that is really important.”
Scott gave a lot of credit to senior Korynn Hill for being to able to get the donation. Hill approached the VFW about donating to the program and according to Post 6683 Post Commander Otis Smith, they listened.
“(Hill) was recognized by the post a couple of years ago for the things she does in the community,” Smith said. “When she put out there that she was raising $500 to help the basketball program and we found out that she had already raised $100, we decided as a post to donate the other $400 to the team.”
Scott said that Hill put the goal of $500 on herself.
“She kind of went out there and did that on her own,” Scott said. “She’s just a go-getter. She knows what needs to be done and she goes and does it.”
Smith said that it’s important to the VFW to support the community.
“It means a lot to us to be able to support the girls but also other organizations, too,” Smith emphasized. “It also means a lot to us to be able to give back to our community. The community is what supports us as soldiers and they continue to support us from the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts to civilian adults.
“This is a great community for the military and the civilian population is very supportive of us.”
Smith also said that it was important to the organization to support future role models in the community.
“We want to be role models and we want to support those that are going to be future role models,” Smith said. “We want to support these kids as much as possible when we know they’re doing the right things.”
Scott said that Hill is certainly a role model for his team and for EHS as a whole.
“Korynn is the example of what a role model is,” Scott said. “She works hard every day, does everything you ask her to do, gives you everything she has and then she goes and does things like this. She is an exemplary athlete, student and person.”
