The 2012 Essence of South Alabama Pageant was held at the Enterprise High School Performing Arts Center on June 2. Bertha Green Jackson founded the pageant in 1997 as the Essence of Dothan Pageant and this year chose to evolve the pageant to include girls from all over Southeast Alabama. Jackson’s original goal was to create a pageant that focused on moral values.

This year’s pageant was an all-day event starting at 2 p.m. with the Toddler’s Division. The 2012 Toddler Miss winner was Chasitee Lewers from Coffee County and the Tiny Miss winner was Bless Jones, also form Coffee County. The Little Miss winner was Shaliyah Walker of Houston County, and the Pre-Teen Miss winner was Maleigha Lewis from Coffee County. The Junior Teen Miss winner was Jasia Guice from Pike County and the Teen Miss winner was JoyVante’ Pettaway from Dale County. The Miss Division winner is Alicia Young from Dale County. These girls received monetary gifts as well as trophies for winning different subcategories including: academics, the spirit award, best evening gown, runway presentation and others.
