As the school year comes to a close and summer approaches, Daleville Public Library is inviting children to stop by and enroll in its summer reading program.

The theme for this year’s program is “Dig Into Reading.”

The program encourages children to explore the world of animals that live or dig under the surface.

The lineup includes topics such as dinosaurs, fossils, ants, plants, worms and, of course, animals that burrow.

The program will feature guest speakers, arts and crafts, music, magic and more.

The experience will kick off June 12 with Russell Davis presenting “The Magic of Reading!”

Davis will entertain the kids with new routines, magic books and comedy.

During the kick off event, each child will also receive a reading log to keep track of books they have read and how long they’ve been reading.

Kathryn Brown, director of the Daleville Public Library, said this practice keeps the children’s minds active and ensures they maintain or improve their level of comprehension, vocabulary and basic reading skills for the next school year.

“We want them to learn to love reading and to become lifelong learners,” she said. “We want them to enjoy their summers and look forward to these reading programs that we try to put on every summer.”

All children who participate in the program will receive a goody bag at the end of each week.

At the closing awards ceremony, the top three readers who have read the most books in each age group will also receive an award or prize, and everyone will be treated to ice cream.

The summer reading program will run June 12, 19, 26 and July 10, 17, 24. Registration is currently taking place at the library, and there is no fee to participate.

The program is open to all children ages 3-11 years old, and times will be split up into age groups.

Three to six year olds will meet from 10 to 11 a.m. and 7-11 year olds will meet from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Residents are encouraged to register by the end of May.

On June 19, Windham Elementary School secretary, Georgia Nichols, and her husband, Kim, will be reading to the children and planting seeds.

Brown said each child will be given a pot and seed packet to plant their own seeds and watch them grow over the summer.

Author and illustrator Chris Rumble will be reading on June 26, and his books will be on display for checkout or purchase.

On July 10, the kids will learn about the animals and insects that burrow underground.

Retired teacher Rita Baker will read on July 17, and will teach the students about archaeology, dinosaurs and fossils.

On July 24, children will be treated to fun, jokes and laughs as Miss Daisy Doodles entertains them with games.

Brown said she appreciates all of the guest readers who are scheduled to come, and hopes for a big turnout of kids.

“We just want them all to come have fun at the library and enjoy these times together,” she said. “Check out a lot of books and read a lot this summer.”
