A teen reading and recreation program is scheduled to launch this summer in Daleville.

During a May 7 Daleville City Council meeting, council members approved $15,500 for the cost to fund the Beneath the Surface and Fit 2 Play Summer Recreation and Reading Program 2013.

Daleville Parks and Recreation Director Kevin Seaton and Daleville Public Library Director Kathryn Brown presented the funding request for the special programs during a May 6 working session.

The budget drawn up by Seaton included painting and flooring repairs, as well as other recreation supplies for a total cost of $12,000.

Brown requested $3,500 for books, arts and craft materials, snacks and other incentive items.

The nine-week program, for teens ages 12-18, is scheduled to begin in June. The registration deadline is May 27.

The Fit 2 Play Summer Program will begin June 3 and run through July 31. The recreation center will be open from noon-8 p.m.

The library program will take place from 3:30-5 p.m. every Wednesday in June and July, except July 3.

For more information on these programs, check The Southeast Sun’s website and look for a story in the May 15th edition of the Daleville Sun-Courier

In other business, Mayor Claudia Wigglesworth took time during the meeting to recognize the 2013 Daleville Pageant queens. The queens were crowned in a city pageant sponsored by the Daleville Area Chamber of Commerce May 4.

Daleville city queens are Miss Daleville Jada Brooks, Little Miss Daleville Mirage Moonschein, Future Little Miss Daleville Serenity Williams, Young Miss Daleville Hayden Whittington, Pre-teen Miss Daleville Kirsten Boise, Junior Miss Daleville Crystal Beal and Viewer’s Choice Hannah Grice.

City council members also approved the resignation of Planning Commission member Larry Kent.

Wigglesworth said a board appointment is available for the position and on the Industrial Development Board.

Council members also approved to waive a rental fee for Southeast Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission to use the Daleville Cultural and Convention Center in September for a banquet. SEARPDC will still pay the $150 clean-up fee.

Lastly, city council members approved $830 for the recreation department's baseball and softball officiating fees for Friday night games.

Other matters addressed by the city council:

  • Wigglesworth announced updates to the city's website should be completed by the end of this month. The website will feature a community calendar for civic organizations to submit their news and events.
  • Councilwoman Katheryne Horace announced the Planning Commission is working on the city's comprehensive plan, and has approved a citizens' survey. The citizens’ survey is an opportunity for residents to answer questions and provide feedback on the city's overall development. Horace said the citizens' survey will be distributed soon.
  • Chamber of Commerce director Kay Kirkland announced the Fort Rucker Appreciation softball game between Daleville city officials and the 1-223rd Aviation Regiment will be June 7 at 6 p.m.

Due to a scheduling conflict, city council members also agreed to change the time of its next meeting from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Therefore, the Daleville City Council will meet again 7 p.m., May 21, at Daleville City Hall.
