Joseph Harmon of David Hicks and Associates addressed the Level Plains City Council Aug. 21 about a water system improvement bid from Hilton Cooper Contracting, Inc.

The council awarded the $179,708.30 contract to Hilton Cooper Contracting, who will complete water system improvements on the city’s A, B, C, and D streets.

A $293,625 Community Development Block Grant has funded the project and groundbreaking will be scheduled following a pre-construction meeting.

In other news, the council approved a resolution to purchase a dual computer system and a server for the city clerk’s office.

The council also agreed to purchase Black Mountain Software, a cash-receipting program, and two scanners used with the software.

All purchases were ordered through Southern Business Systems and will cost an estimated $8,919, plus shipping charges.

According to city clerk Pat Wambles, the new software and computer system will allow the city to make daily deposits, which would speed up the cash receiving process.

The council also agreed to approve a limit of $10,000 in the resolution, incase of unforeseen costs associated with the installation of the new system.

In other business, Councilman Edward Berry discussed the repairs recently made to a city vehicle.

The 2004 Dodge Durang, which is used by the Level Plains Police Department, was inspected by Berry, who found several electrical problems.

Berry added coolants, replaced a battery terminal and replaced missing fuses from the vehicle.

Quality Automotive and Truck Repair in Enterprise also ran diagnostic tests, bringing the total cost of parts and labor to $210.65.

Other actions taken by the council:

  • The council approved a motion to allow the Level Plains Volunteer Fire Department to pay Tuscaloosa Fire Equipment $2,611.40 for repairs to a city fire truck.

  • Council member James Bullinger announced due to local elections at the Dothan Civic Center, the Second District’s Congressional Dinner will be tentatively moved to Wednesday, Nov. 7, pending confirmation from Rep. Martha Roby’s office.

  • The council unanimously agreed to change the city of Level Plains’ logo on council member’s nametags and nameplates. This was due to the old logo losing detail and distorting when shrunk.

  • Mayor Tyrus Waters also said Troy Cablevision has requested to franchise in Level Plains and added he would be addressing the council on the subject in the near future.
