In an effort to stay connected and provide information to parents and the community, Windham Elementary and Daleville High Schools have joined the social network craze.
WES and DHS are on Facebook.
Windham Elementary School paraprofessional Janet Nabinger said she created the Facebook page to give residents another avenue to receive information about the school.
“I just think it is the fastest way to get information to the parents that have access to media devices, whether it’s their phones or computers,” Nabinger said. “Social media is just the fastest and easiest way to communicate nowadays.”
Inspired by Nabinger's efforts and success, Daleville High School secretary Raven Layton also created a Facebook page for the high school recently.
So far, WES's page already has 187 followers and DHS has 471 friends.
Anyone can view the pages, and a number of alumni have already liked the page.
“So far everyone’s loved it,” Layton said. “It’s been pulling a lot of alumni. They’re interested in seeing how the school is doing, how their old club and activities are and which teachers are still around.”
The pages are updated frequently and followers can find information about upcoming events, announcements, DHS's daily bulletins, WES's monthly newsletters, forms, emergency notifications (such as inclement weather, closed days and time changes), after-school activities and sporting events.
To find the Facebook pages, simply search Windham Elementary School and Daleville High to find the links to the pages.
Layton also encourages locals to check out Daleville Warhawks for the football program, Daleville Boys Basketball Program, Daleville High School Cheerleaders and Daleville Warhawk JV Cheer pages.
Windham Elementary School principal Chris Mitten said WES is also looking into getting an mobile app and hopes to have it up and running by the end of the school year.
“The whole idea is to update our ability to communicate,” he said. “Communication is key. Keeping parents and us informed.”
Another outreach the school systems are directing parents to is its online presence.
The Daleville City School System recently updated its website.
The site has existed for several years, but Daleville High School assistant principal Josh Robertson said the page needed a more updated look and the schools were not able to access the page to update the information quickly.
Now the site is being designed and constructed through SCHOOLinSiTES out of Mobile.
“It gives us more control here locally than what we had in the past,” Robertson said. “Some things will be done in-house versus us having to call someone else to upgrade things.”
The site includes school and district news, the parent portal, important forms, calendars, announcements, school bus schedules and routes, breakfast and lunch menus and links to clubs, organizations, sports and activities.
All teachers can also create pages through the site to use to interact with students for classroom activities, notes, assignments and homework.
Robertson said the goal for the site is to disseminate current and updated information and to hopefully make it more user-friendly for visitors in the future.
