An Ozark man who has described himself as the president of a south Alabama sovereign citizen group called the “Republic for the United States of America,” has been indicted on several tax-related charges.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, James Timothy Turner, known as Tim Turner, is charged with conspiracy to defraud the United States, attempting to pay taxes with fictitious financial instruments, attempting to obstruct and impede the Internal Revenue Service, failing to file a 2009 federal income tax return and providing false testimony in a federal bankruptcy proceeding.

The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the IRS and will be prosecuted by trial attorney Justin Gelfand of the Justice Department’s Tax Division and Middle District of Alabama Assistant U.S. Attorney Gray Borden.

If convicted, Turner could face a maximum of 164 years in federal prison and a maximum fine of $2,350,000 and mandatory restitution.
