During a Sunday morning fire on May 13, a family lost its home and one family pet.
According to Fire Chief Jeffery Wood, the Battens Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire at the 4200 Block of Highway 27 South at approximately 10:20 a.m.
Wood said flames were visible through the roof at the back of the house when firefighters arrived at approximately 10:27 a.m. The family was not in the house, but a family pet did perish in the fire.
Wood said firefighters fought the fire for about two hours, being back in service at approximately 12:47 p.m. The Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Department, Goodman Volunteer Fire Department and Enterprise Fire Department provided mutual aid.
The Enterprise Rescue Squad and the Enterprise Police Department were also on scene to provide assistance. Red Cross was contacted to provide assistance to the family, according to Wood.
Wood said the house was a "total loss" due to fire and heat damage. The cause of the fire has not been determined, but the investigation is still ongoing.
