Members of the Daleville City Council are planning to expand the sidewalks in the city after approving a resolution with the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) during a June 18 meeting.

The resolution allows for DMD Engineers Inc. to turn in an application and apply for the ALDOT's Transportation Alternatives Program grant for new sidewalks.

The funding would allow the city to make sidewalk improvements along Daleville Avenue, Donnell Boulevard and Warhawk Drive.

The improvements would expand the existing sidewalk on Donnell Boulevard from Daleville Avenue to Tiny Williams Drive as well as add a sidewalk on Warhawk Drive and on the East side of Highway 85 from Highway 84 to Bojangles.

In the resolution, the city agrees to pay 20 percent of the construction costs, as well as any engineer costs. The project is estimated to cost $340,000.

A second resolution was passed by city council members to contribute $1,500 from its municipal funds to the Fort Rucker director of Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation to assist with the general funds for the Wiregrass Freedom Fest activities on Fort Rucker July 3.

The event is free and open to the public.

Councilmembers also approved a mutual services contract with the Wiregrass Tennis Association for the organization to provide tennis lessons in Daleville, and for the group to resurface the old basketball courts behind the Billy Adkins Community Center into tennis courts.

In the agreement, the Wiregrass Tennis Association agreed to pay to resurface the old courts while the city agreed to pay to refurbish the lights.

Mayor Claudia Wigglesworth said the Wiregrass Tennis Association will not have exclusive use of the tennis courts, and the courts will be available during the same hours as the community center, except when the tennis lessons are in session.

The city is currently waiting on estimates for the lighting.

In others business, councilmembers approved board appointments for John Dickinson on the Board of Adjustments and Jim Spears on the Planning Commission.

A board appointment is still available on the Industrial Development Board. Interested residents are asked to contact Daleville City Hall at 598-2345.

In other news, city clerk Angelia Filmore discussed with the councilmembers the city's plan to close Daleville City Hall every day from 12-1 p.m. for lunch hour, effective Aug. 5.

"The water department is closing from 12-1, Alabama Power closes from 12-1 and we have issues with so few (people) now in this building to be able to conduct business between 12-1," she said. "Staggered lunches sometimes will leave one person."

Filmore asked the council if there would be any issues with city hall closing from 12-1 p.m. No one objected.

"This will facilitate when the county comes (for tag renewal) because they were concerned about their one person being able to go to lunch," she said. "We don't want to do anything without the council being aware, but we would want to start this August 5 to have time to facilitate that."

Starting Aug. 5, the court system will also have a change in start time from 3 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Daleville city offices will be closed July 4-5 in observance of Independence Day.

City employees working the holiday are asked to take their time off on or before Sept. 3.

Wigglesworth also announced the deadline for residents to return the citizen survey is July 8.

The surveys can be returned to one of the following locations: Daleville City Hall, the water department or the Daleville Public Library.

The Daleville City Council will meet again at 5:30 p.m., July 2, at Daleville City Hall.
