United States District Judge Mark E. Fuller sentenced an Enterprise man to 40 months in prison recently for the robberies of two local banks.

Benjamin Michael Smith, 24, of Enterprise, will serve his time in federal prison for the charges of bank robbery and attempted bank robbery.

During a February 2011 hearing, Smith admitted to robbing The Citizen's Bank of Enterprise.

During a December 2011 hearing, Smith admitted to the robbery of the Community Bank and Trust of Enterprise.

Joseph Tyler Weldon, 21, of Elba, who was accused of attempting to run over a Coffee County Sheriff's deputy was sentenced to three years in jail last week by Circuit Judge Thomas Head.

Weldon was originally charged with attempted murder after the incident, in which he rammed his car into a family home and nearly ran over Coffee County Sheriff's deputy Dale Grimes.

In February 2011, Weldon plead guilty to attempted first-degree assault and first-degree criminal mischief.

At the time of the incident, police say Weldon had been huffing compressed air.
