The Enterprise Board of Education discussed potential renovations to College Street Elementary School during a March 26 meeting.
During his Superintendent’s report, Aaron Milner brought up concerns with the driveway at the entrance of College Street.
Milner said the driveway is worn and holds water in certain places.
“It also needs to be widened so we can have two lanes of cars going in and out,” he said. “If a parent has to stop in the front, which happens at an elementary school, their car blocks traffic all the way out into College Street.”
Milner also suggested renovating the awning over the bus-pickup area, which hasn’t seem upgrades in more than 30 years, as well as adding a portico or covered driveway to the front of the school.
“I think we need to build an awning that goes all the way to back so children can go under awning into the building,” Milner said. “The bus-pickup area can be a true aluminum awning, but with the history of College Street, I feel and I think the board will agree, we should design the portico to match the front of the building.”
The board reviewed a tentative sketch of the potential awning, but no actions were taken regarding the issue.
Milner recommended entering into a contract with the Enterprise City Schools’ architect in the future to develop the renovation plans further.
In other news, restroom renovations at several Enterprise elementary schools were slowed temporarily because of compliance issues with Americans with Disabilities Act at Holly Hill Elementary School.
Milner said the school would be losing two to three bathroom stalls in order to create two handicapped-accessible bathrooms.
However, Milner said those stalls would be added back inside the new cafeteria, which is currently under construction.
The restroom plans are being resubmitted to the building commission, and the board plans to accept bids once those have been approved.
Milner said the cafeteria’s construction is moving along as planned, and the foundation should be completed in the next week or two.
Milner also briefed the board about ongoing projects undertaken by the Enterprise City Schools Maintenance Staff at all of the system’s schools.
