Two area restaurants are included in the “Masters Of Alabama BBQ” and an Enterprise man is on the front cover of the Alabama Department of Tourism’s publication developed in celebration of the “The Year of Alabama BBQ.”

Madison “Big Daddy” Terry is depicted on the cover of the publication that features portraits of 23 restaurants from around the state. He and his wife Shelley are owners of Big Daddy’s on Rawls Street in Enterprise.

The Webb’s 231 Bar-B-Q, owned by Rawls Webb, on Highway 231 in Midland City is the other local restaurant featured.

Other featured restaurants are Archibald and Woodrow’s Bar-B-Q in Tuscaloosa, Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q in Decatur, Byron’s Smokehouse in Auburn, Chuck Wagon BBQ in Madison, Demetri’s BBQ in Homewood, Dreamland in Tuscaloosa, Fat Boy’s Bar-B-Que Ranch in Prattville, Fred’s Small Time Bar-B-Q in Calera, Golden Rule Bar-B-Q in Irondale, Hancock’s Bar-B-Que in Selma, Hog Wild BBQ in Gulf Shores, Jim ‘N Nick’s Bar-B-Q in Birmingham, L.A. Barbecue in Summerdale, Lannie’s Bar-B-Q Spot in Selma, McMillan Bar-B-Que in Mobile, R & B Bar-B-Q in Lincoln, Real Pit Bar-B-Q in Greenville, Rib-It-Up in Birmingham, Smokey C’s Bar-B-Que and Wings in Decatur, Smokin’ on the Boulevard in Florence and Top Hat Barbecue in Blount Springs.

Monday morning, the Terrys joined Rick Cutts, owner of Cutts Restaurant; Jamie Baker and Paula Drumm, owner and manager, respectively, of Shane’s Rib Shack; Natalie Sumrall, manager of Good to Go; Sherry Smith, owner of Richie’s BBQ; and Grace Narron, owner of Larry’s BBQ for a proclamation signing declaring November as the Month of Alabama Barbecue in Enterprise, in conjunction with the Alabama Tourism Department’s declaration of this year as the Year of Alabama Barbecue.

“I would like to thank all of y’all personally for what you do for our city,” said Enterprise Mayor Kenneth Boswell, as he signed the proclamation. “Enterprise is fortunate to have a variety of barbecue establishments within the city limits that offer different styles and flavors of barbecue.

“There are other dishes indigenous to the South,” Boswell said, “but there is a mystique about the different ways that barbecue can be prepared, seasoned and served.”

Ten years ago, Alabama Department of Tourism’s director Lee Sentell devised the idea to devote an entire year to highlight a specific asset of the state. Art, history and outdoor sports have been featured. Alabama food has been celebrated twice.

During the first Year of Alabama Food, the tourism bureau printed a pamphlet of the “100 Alabama dishes to eat before you die.” It is now in its fifth printing.

In addition to the “Masters of Alabama BBQ,” the Year of Alabama Barbecue features 75 restaurants in more than 50 cities. Alabama Tourism Department Public Relations Director Brian Jones said the state has more barbecue restaurants per capita than any other state. Alabama also has 252 professional barbecue teams and the 12th-most sanctioned barbecue contests, he said.

The year-long celebration of barbecue includes a Year of Alabama Barbecue website and free smart-phone app, a traveling photo exhibit featuring legendary Alabama pitmasters, a documentary film that chronicles the history of Alabama barbecue, and the announcement of the first inductees into the Alabama Barbecue Hall of Fame.

The website, www.alabamabbq.com, includes links to some of the state's best places for ribs, pulled pork and chicken, as well as a barbecue-themed road trip and a calendar listing of the top barbecue festivals around the state.

The free "Alabama BBQ Trail" smart phone app features the history and favorite dishes of more than 75 barbecue restaurants in 52 cities across the state. The app also includes an alert that notifies users when they are within 20 miles of one of their chosen barbecue spots.

The first inductees of the Alabama Barbecue Hall of Fame will be announced on May 18 in Birmingham.
