During an April 16 council meeting, Daleville City Council members approved several board appointments and recognized two Daleville officers for completing the emergency medical responder course.
Council members reappointed incumbent Steve Kirkland to the Daleville City Board of Education for a five-year term ending June 2018.
"He served for two years filing in for someone who resigned and moved out of the area," Mayor Claudia Wigglesworth said.
Council member Bob Slagle said he'd like to see Kirkland serve an entire term, and made the motion to reappoint him.
The council members also appointed Jesse Nelson to the Industrial Development Board for a staggered six-year term.
Wigglesworth also took time during the council meeting to recognize two Daleville Public Safety officers for volunteering and taking the emergency medical responder course.
Several Daleville Public Safety employees recently completed the emergency medical responder course necessary to drive an ambulance. The course took place every Saturday for five weeks and lasted about 10 hours.
Employees who completed the course are: Sgt. Brad Meissner, Sgt. Levi Dahlquist, Heather Sapp, Zachary Smith and Sgt. Stacey Austin.
Meissner and Dahlquist were present and recognized at the meeting.
In other news, Wigglesworth announced Polyengineering, Inc., of Dothan, has reviewed the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) in the city hall and the department of public safety buildings, and has provided a report.
The cost to make the repairs, Wigglesworth said, is so costly the city may have to bid it out.
"We (don't) have a professional staff that can write the bid to put it out," she said. "Polyengineering can also fulfill that requirement for us."
Polyengineering provided an estimate for the final design, bidding and award phase for a cost of $5,000. They also proposed for the construction phase costs not to exceed $4,500.
However, Wigglesworth said the city had not received any estimates on the cost for the repairs.
"I provided the document to one heating and cooling company and asked them for an estimate," she said. "That gives us at least an idea if we're going to have to go out for a bid."
The council members approved to move forward with the Polyengineering estimate of $9,500, under the condition that the expense is high enough that they have to go out for bids.
Wigglesworth also announced the city has an opportunity to purchase half-price playground equipment from an Alabama distributor.
The playgrounds were used as displays at trade shows.
Taking the shipment cost into consideration, councilmembers approved to purchase the playground equipment at a cost not to exceed $20,000.
Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Kay Kirkland also addressed the board with a few announcements.
The Daleville Pilot Club has disbanded, and the Daleville Chamber of Commerce has taken over the Daleville pageant.
The pageant will take place May 4 at the new Daleville High School gym.
Kirkland said arrangements are still being made for the exact date of the Fort Rucker Appreciation softball game between Daleville officials and 1-223rd Aviation Regiment.
Kirkland said the game will either be June 7th or 8th.
The Hot Dog Sale to raise funds for the ChoctawPoochie Dog Park will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., May 1.
There will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony, 10 a.m., May 16, for the Red Oak Mobile Home Park.
The council also announced and/or approved the following:
- This month marks Angelia Filmore’s 26th year as city clerk.
- Councilmembers approved for the baseball officiating fees not to exceed $2,525.
- The front porch tiles at Daleville City Hall have been replaced and are complete, but the doors need to be replaced. Councilmembers approved for the replacement doors not to exceed $6,500.
- Councilmembers approved a travel request for Dahlquist to attend the resource officer conference in Gulf Shores June 2-7 at a cost of $310. Another travel request was approved for Daleville Police Chief Harvey Mathis to attend the new chiefs’ development seminar June 4-7 at a cost of $330. A third request was approve for Wigglesworth to attend a response and recovery for a disaster conference in Pratville May 13-14 at a cost of $200.
- The Southeast Alabama Regional Planning and Development Commission have developed a citizens’ survey for review by the mayor and the city's planning commission. The citizens’ survey is the first phase in updating the city's comprehensive plan.
The Daleville City Council will meet again at 5:30 p.m., May 7, at Daleville City Hall.
