On Tuesday, June 14, also designated as Flag Day, a bi-annual flag retirement ceremony was held at Sam Boswell Honda.
Several veteran and community groups helped with the changing of the 30 by 50 ft. flag, including local Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, Patriot Guard Riders, Vietnam Veterans of America, Disabled American Veterans and Auxiliary, VFW Post 6683 and Auxiliary, Sons of the American Revolution, Team RWB, Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association, American Legion, the Warrants Officer's Association and other military organizations.
This year, 2016, marks 100 years since Flag Day was first observed. The holiday was first recognized in 1916 following a presidential proclamation from Woodrow Wilson, according to the America's Library website.
Flag Day serves as a day that "commemorates the adoption of the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States," the website said.
June 14 was also the 241st birthday of the United States Army, which was first established as the Continental Army. To celebrate the Army's birthday, a 13-fold ceremony was held before the retirement ceremony.
Each fold represents a different American and individual idea, including one for each parent of soldiers and veterans, the belief in God and His guidance, allegiance to the United States and more.
"There are some traditions and ways of doing things that have a deep meaning," VFW Post 6683 Commander James Rathburn said during the ceremony. "Share this with your children and all those who love the symbol of liberty and freedom."
