A Newton couple was arrested by the Dale County Sheriff’s Office Sept. 6 for torture and willful abuse of a 4-year-old relative.
Investigators arrested Andrew Dylan Chandler, 20, and Bridget Marie Chandler, 18, and charged them with torture and willful abuse of a child under 18 years of age by a responsible person.
However, based on new information, Dale County Investigator Mason Bynum said the charges will be upgraded to aggravated child abuse.
According to Bynum, Dale County Sheriff’s investigators were contacted by the Newton Police Department in reference to a 4-year-old female who was being treated at Flowers Hospital for injuries that appeared to be the result of an assault in Newton.
Investigators responded to the hospital and discovered that the victim had multiple bruises throughout her body and multiple burn marks consistent with being burned with a cigarette.
The victim was treated and admitted to the hospital for observation.
Dale County Sheriff’s investigators executed a search warrant at the victim’s residence and collected evidence pertaining to the investigation. Investigators also interviewed the Chandlers who were providing care for the victim during the time of the incidents.
After further review, both suspects were placed in to the Dale County Jail under a $25,000 bond. The couple has since bonded out.
