Members of the Enterprise City School Board unanimously approved a resolution during a March 18 meeting showing their support of the Alabama College and Career Ready Standards.
Recently superintendents in District 3 of the Alabama Superintendent's Association, which includes all superintendents in the Wiregrass area, signed a proclamation in support of Alabama's version of Common Core.
School boards passed the resolutions following the signing of the proclamation to show solidarity against the Alabama Legislature's efforts to delay or repeal the standards.
The Common Core standards were created by the National Governor's Association in order to have similar expectations for students in all states, but allow the freedom for states to pick the curriculum they desire to teach the standards.
The resolution reads that, "the Enterprise City Schools Board of Education recognizes and supports the Alabama College and Career Ready Standards in conjunction with the Alabama State Department of Education's Plan 2020 to establish rigorous and attainable educational standards essential to preparing 21st century public school students for the curriculum to which they will be exposed in two- or four-year college, trade school, or technical school without the need for remediation."
It goes on to say the current action proposed by the Alabama State Legislature would effectively usurp the responsibilities of the popularly-elected Alabama State Board of Education.
Superintendent Camille Wright said if the Alabama College and Career Ready Standards were repealed, the school system would have wasted the past four years it has spent making the shift to the new standards.
