Deputies with the Coffee County Sheriff's Department responded to a shooting Feb. 1 at about 11 p.m. on County Road 651.

According to Deputy Chief Ronnie Whitworth, the victim was in conversation with the suspect and when he turned to walk away, he was shot in the back.

The victim, 65-year-old Thomas Haygood, was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Deputies have identified the shooter and an arrest is pending.

Deputies arrest four after string of burglaries

The sheriff's department has also put an end to a string of thefts in the northern portion of the county.

Whitworth said four juveniles have been arrested for their involvement in several burglaries.

According to Whitworth, the juveniles were transported to the Southeast Alabama Diversion Center.

He said the four had a hearing in front of a judge Feb. 4 and were transported back to the diversion center.

Whitworth said a lot of the stolen merchandise has been recovered and returned to its owners.
