Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, members of Disabled American Veterans and Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Marine Corps League, and other groups that represent veterans helped change the flag at Sam Boswell Honda on Saturday, Nov. 7.
The flag is changed about every six months, typically around the time of Flag Day and Veteran's Day.
Now, a POW/MIA flag is also flying underneath the American Flag.
"Enterprise is a great town to have grown up in, to live in now and have a business," O'Neal Boswell, owner of Sam Boswell Honda, said. "We are very proud to fly this flag in what I think is one of the best cities in the country in the best country in the world."
Veterans from World War II, the Korean War and other veterans were recognized during the ceremony.
The speaker for the event was Dave Riley, the national Sr. vice commander of the DAV and a former rescue swimmer with the Coast Guard, who told his story of becoming a disabled veteran.
"I became disabled in '97," Riley said. "It was a bacterial infection through my sinuses; it turned me septic. My wife had to make all the decisions to amputate while I was in a coma. After that, wasn't much need for a no-armed, no-legged rescue swimmer in the Coast Guard."
Riley, who will become the first Coast Guardsman and Alabamian to become the national commander of the DAV next August, said the DAV saved his life after an eight-year experience with depression.
"The DAV was in the background all this time, just kind of watching me and guiding me," Riley said. "They brought me out to the Winter Sports Clinic in Aspen, Colo. That turned my life around. I really enjoyed being a part of the DAV, and it really saved my life and my family's life."
