Lady Hawks earn first win

The Daleville Lady Hawks won their first volleyball match of the season against the Samson Tigers on Sept. 11.

“The game against Samson was intense,” Daleville coach Terri Lynne Peacock said. “The girls didn’t really have a whole lot of time to breathe. They kept working and persevered through it. It was really good to see them bow up and get the job done.”

The match went to five games, but the Lady Hawks came out on top. Daleville won its first and second games (25-16, 25-19), but lost the next two games (26-24, 25-23). The team battled back in the fifth game, coming out on top 15-7.

“The first game was the biggest win,” Peacock said. “I was very proud we were tough today. We stuck it out to the end.”

La Tia Filsaime led the team with eight kills and six blocks.

“She had a pretty good game on the net,” Peacock said. “In the fifth game, she came up big as a blocking factor for us.”

Tamia Richardson followed Filsaime with seven kills and went on a five-ace rally in the fourth game.

“That played a big factor in us catching up,” Peacock said. “It was a close game. Her serves got us right back in there to where we needed to be.”

Kiana Coleman made a huge impact during the match with her serves. In the first game, Coleman went on a seven-serve rally. She went on a five-serve rally in the second game, and a six-serve rally in the third game.

“Kiana was a playmaker tonight,” Peacock said. “That child touched the ball 15 or more times in every game. She was all over the court. She played so hard.”

The Lady Hawks played the Carroll Lady Eagles on Thursday, Sept. 13, and came up short in a straight-set loss.

“We were just flat today,” Peacock said after the match. “We still had good ball control, but we just couldn’t clinch the win.”

The Lady Hawks lost all three games by no more than 10.

“We hung in there with them, but we just couldn’t finish it,” Peacock said. “The cards just didn’t fall in our favor.”

The Lady Hawks lost the first game 25-17. Daleville tied it up twice in the beginning of the game, but was unable to take the lead. Carroll had a nine-point lead (20-11) at one point, but Daleville battled back to take the final to 25-17.

Filsaime led the team with six kills in the game. Coleman recorded two digs, and Beckham had three aces in a row. 

The second game started off with the Lady Hawks leading 3-0, but the Lady Eagles tied the game four times before they took lead for the rest of the game and won 25-18.

Lady Hawk Filsaime led the team again with four kills and a block. Beckham had one kill during the game, and Richardson had one ace.

After going back and fourth at the beginning of the third game, Daleville led the Lady Eagles by six points 13-7. The Lady Hawks could not hold the lead though. Carroll rallied to tie the score and took the lead for the rest of the game on its way to a 25-21 victory to finish.

Richardson led the team in the third game with three kills, followed by Filsaime with one. Chilonda Flowers earned an ace during the final game.

“I’m glad we fought them,” Peacock said. “We’ve just got to stop playing from behind.”

The Lady Hawks hosted New Brockton on Tuesday after the Sun-Courier went to press, and will play Carroll again Sept. 20 at the gymnasium across from Windham Elementary. The junior varsity match begins at 4 p.m., and varsity will follow.
