The Level Plains City Council passed Ordinance 353, which raises the city’s water rate, at its regularly scheduled meeting on March 19.
The ordinance, which was introduced at the March 5 meeting, raises the price for the first 2,500 gallons of water from $15.50 to $16 and raised the price of every 1,000 gallons after that from $3.40 to $3.60.
“We’ve done studies and everything has gone up so we have to try and keep up with it,” Level Plains Mayor Bruce Grantham said at the March 5 meeting.
The ordinance was unanimously passed.
In other business, the council approved a resolution annexing the property of the Rodriguez’s property, which sits on the corner of Montevallo court and Oak Lake Drive, into the city limits.
Level Plains Fire Department Chief Jamie Gatlin opened bids for the financing of a new fire truck for the city.
Trinity Bank was awarded the bid at a 3.875 percent interest rate as the lowest qualified bidder.
The council also voted to approve Resolution 305, which adds a police lieutenant position to the city’s payroll.
It also approved sending Level Plains City Clerk Heather Furniss to attend municipal clerk training in Tuscaloosa in August and at Gulf Shores in December.
They voted to nominate Jennifer Zornes to be the City of Level Plains nominee for the Coffee County Equalization Board.
Councilman James Bullinger gave an update for the bicentennial committee.
“Last Wednesday we had a city-wide meeting with the staff from City Hall and we started making progress,” Bullinger said. “We’re working towards doing a luncheon in conjunction with the ceremony. Ken Smith, who is the director for the Alabama League of Municipalities, will be the guest speaker.”
He noted that both a time capsule and the bronze plaque to commemorate the capsule have been completed and in the city’s possession. The celebration is still set to take place Tuesday, April 30.
The next Level Plains City Council meeting will be April 16 at 6 p.m. at Level Plains City Hall. The meeting is open to the public.
