The Dale County Commission signed a proclamation declaring April as Child Abuse Prevention Month during a meeting March 24.

Jessica Goolsby, community outreach manager for the Dothan-based Southeast Alabama Child Advocacy Center, attended the meeting to help promote the Blue Ribbon campaign, which spreads understanding and awareness of child abuse.

The Southeast Child Advocacy Center (CAC) serves as an advocate for child victims by working to reduce the trauma and anxiety associated with sexual and severe physical abuse. The CAC provides programs and services for child victims and their families that will allow them to begin the healing process.

The CAC serves Dale, Geneva, and Houston counties and is a member of the Alabama Network of Children's Advocacy Centers and the National Children's Alliance. For more information about the CAC, call 671-1779 or visit southeastcac.org.

In other business, the commission finalized the Dale County Courthouse renovation plans, approving a motion to award a bid for the work to Hughes Construction for $2.8 million.

The extensive renovation plans, which include updating the heating and cooling systems, re-structuring the building’s fire protection, installing new ceilings, lighting, and floor coverings, adding handicap accessible bathrooms, building exterior railings, and painting throughout, are scheduled to begin in April.

The work is expected to save the city about $48,000 in energy costs annually.

The Dale County Commission meets the second and fourth Monday of every month. The commission will meet again Monday, April 7, at 4:30 p.m.
