The Daleville girls basketball team won the 2013 Daleville Christmas Tournament Dec. 21.
“It feels good to win,” Daleville coach Zach Kelley said. “I told them that it’s the seniors’ last change to win it so they might as well go out with a bang. They did it. I’m happy for them.”
The Lady Hawks defeated Carroll 34-23 in the championship round.
“We were sluggish in the first half,” Kelley said. “We came out strong in the second half, though. We got on the boards and were rebounding.”
Carroll had an 11-7 lead after the first quarter. Daleville came within three points (15-12) of Carroll at halftime.
Daleville took the lead in the third quarter by not allowing the Lady Eagles any points, but adding 12 points of its own. The Lady Hawks scored 10 points in the fourth quarter to win the game.
The win was the first Daleville Christmas Tournament title for Kelley.
La Tia Fils-Aime led the team with 21 points. Garry Richard followed with six points. Kiara Blanks scored three points. Chyana Blanks and Alasia Stewart had two points apiece.
The Lady Hawks defeated Luverne 50-24 in the semifinal round of the tournament.
“That was a redemption-type game for us because they beat us earlier this season,” Kelley said. “We knew we had business to take care of, and we did it. It was a great effort.”
Daleville had a lead of 13-7 after the first quarter, but Luverne outscored the Lady Hawks 12-5 in the second quarter to gain a 19-18 lead at halftime.
Daleville allowed Luverne to score only three points in the third quarter, but added 13 of its own to have a 31-22 lead at the end of the third.
The fourth quarter was the Lady Hawks’ highest scoring quarter when they tallied 19 points to the Lady Tigers’ two to win the game.
La Tia Fils-Aime recorded 21 points in the game. Jazmin Cephus followed with nine points. Stewart made eight, and Eternity Hayes had four. Richard recorded three points. Shaquanta Fils-Aime and Chyana Blanks had two points apiece. Mercy Alvarez had one point.
Daleville defeated Headland 53-42 in the first round of the tournament.
“We were on fire with our 3-pointers in that game,” Kelley said. “It was a balanced game with the players. Everyone stepped up.”
Headland led the Lady Hawks 14-11 after the first quarter before Daleville outscored Headland 17-6 to take a 28-20 lead at halftime.
Daleville maintained the lead in the third quarter and outscored Headland 11-6 to take the score to 39-26 going into the final quarter.
Headland tried to battle back in the fourth quarter and outscored Daleville 16-14, but it wasn’t enough to earn the win.
La Tia Fils-Aime led the team with 18 points. Cephus followed with 15 points. Payton Souders and Chyana Blanks recorded six apiece. Stewart made four points. Richard and Hayes made two points each.
The Lady Hawks played Opp in a regular season game Dec. 17 and won 31-25.
