A fulfilling job

Nobody ever said the life of a volunteer emergency medical technician was easy. Late night phone calls, braving bad weather, with little gratitude and no pay … it’s definitely not a glorious job, but Capt. Jerry Sapp, captain of the Daleville Rescue Squad, said it is a fulfilling one.

“It’s rewarding when you help people in their time of need,” he said.

Sapp has been with the Daleville Rescue Squad since 1992 and has been there ever since.

The volunteer rescue squad was formed in 1969 by Joe Gallo, father of local attorney Joseph Gallo. Before the squad was formed, Daleville was served by Ozark, which took at least 15 minutes for a squad to reach the city of Daleville.

The squad has slowly dwindled over the years to less than a dozen volunteers. The volunteers who are left are burned out from working too much and now the rescue squad needs more people — EMT’s and drivers.

Sapp said volunteers have to be at least 19-years-old and live within seven minutes of the Daleville Public Safety Complex. From the time a call comes into the station, the rescue squad has to be out the doors within nine minutes, Sapp said.

Interested volunteers can pick up an application at the Daleville Police Department. For additional information, contact Sapp at 598-4442.
