After an 18 minute-long executive session, the Daleville Board of Education named Dr. Diane Flournoy acting superintendent.
Andrew Kelley resigned his position as superintendent Feb. 2. He had led the school system since his appointment in 2004. All in all, he was with Daleville City Schools for 27 years and currently is under a special separation agreement with the board serving as “special consultant to the board,” according to a press release.
Flournoy said, “It’s an exciting time. I’m happy.” She said she plans to apply for the permanent position, something she has been in pursuit of for many of her 33 years with the Daleville system. Flournoy said she has taught elementary and high school grades, served as the alternative school principal, middle school principal and high school principal. For the last 10 years she has served as an assistant superintendent.
After Kelley stepped down, the board approved for Flournoy to lead “all educational and student-related matters” until an interim superintendent was chosen.
Board Chairman Steve Kirkland was authorized by the board during the Wednesday, Feb. 17 meeting, to sign an interim contract with Flournoy.
The new acting superintendent did receive a salary increase as part of her additional duties, which will continue throughout the time the board searches for a new superintendent and/or until the position is filled.
However, the amount of Flournoy's interim contract was not revealed. Dale Marsh, board attorney, told The Sun that a copy of the agreement, according to Alabama law, will be made available after it has been approved by the full board and is part of the board minutes. That action is expected at the next scheduled board meeting March 16 at 4:30.
In addition, the board is expected to make an official announcement of the vacancy for the office of superintendent, also “in accordance with state law,” said Marsh.
Meanwhile, Kelley continues to be paid as a special consultant at the same salary and benefits has had as superintendent. According to the Alabama Department of Education website, Kelley’s salary is $134,640.
