In an effort to seek ways to be more efficient and increase productivity, the Daleville City Council and the city Water Board, June 21, approved a trial period to test global positioning system-trackers.

“The city wants to try the GPS tracking device to determine if it will do as the company claims it will, which is to help us reduce our overall cost, efficiently monitor our fleet and increase productivity,” explained Mayor Claudia Wigglesworth. “We are always looking for ways to be more efficient and this technology may help us.”

The trial period will last for 90 days with the expectation that three months of collected data from three city departments, including the Department of Public Safety, will enable officials to determine if continued use of the device is cost-effective, the mayor said.

The Logitrac devices will be placed on 10 police vehicles in addition to public works and water department vehicles. Speed, location, fuel efficiency, idle time and more will be tracked and detailed reports provided to supervisors and officials.

City council members also approved a resolution approving the hiring of a special project assistant. The temporary employee will assist the city clerk.

In other business, the council approved the payment of $58,994.83 in bills.

The next council meeting is scheduled for July 5 at 5:30 p.m. in the council chambers.
