Dear Editor:
What’s going on with the Boll Weevil Monument? Driving down Main Street I was appalled at the purple ribbon adorning the monument as well as the signs placed all around it advertising a “Girls Night Out.”
Did the city charge for this promotion? Did they even think about what kind of image it portrays to decorate a historical monument that defines our city’s heritage with advertising? Guess they’re selling off chunks of our history now.
Just another example of the city leadership gone awry.

Yes it is a historic monument but how does the bunting or the small signs attached to the bunting take away from that?
"Girls Night Out" / Paint The Town Purple will bring hundreds of people downtown. Those same people will contribute to the city with their sales tax dollars as well as help raise funds for local Domestic Violence awareness. So the city does benefit from the "advertising" by increased sales tax revenue, a potential decrease in domestic violence, and increased awareness of our historic district.
