Gov. Robert Bentley greeted the Wiregrass during a brief visit to Daleville Friday.
During the one-day trip, Bentley had lunch at The Diner, met with taxpayers and answered questions concerning economic development.
“Once or twice a week I try to get out of Montgomery and visit small towns all over the state … usually a different county every week,” he said.
Bentley said he realizes everyone is very interested in what’s going to happen to Fort Rucker because of the state’s strong aviation industry, but his goal is to diversify industry within the state so that if there is an economic downturn, it won’t affect Alabama as hard.
He said he likes to meet with local officials because they are really the ones to help make a change and get things started. He also likes to meet local business owners because the small businesses are where jobs are created.
“Most jobs are created by people who work in places just like this,” Bentley said about The Diner. “It’s very important to try to recruit an Airbus to Alabama, but 75 percent of all the jobs that are created in the United States are created by existing businesses and by small businesses.”
Bentley said he would be visiting Fort Rucker sometime in September.
